Synthesis of Information: Combining text-based logic, structural rubric constraints, and multivariable graphical arguments to evaluate, organize, and support an extended scientific evaluation.

(DOK 4 - Extended Thinking) Students synthesize multiple ecological data tracks, physical profiles, and community timelines across the entire unit to evaluate the systemic drivers of an ecosystem. While introductory class sessions center on peer collaboration and evidence mapping (Unit 3 Review Stations and completing the Botany 2 Unit 3: Summary Table), the sequence culminates in a DOK 4 dual-assessment block. Under the parameters of the Botany II Unit 3: Concept Mapping Rubric, students arrange and cross-link critical conceptual nodes (such as Primary Succession, Secondary Succession, Population, Climate, Ecosystem, Annuals, Perennials, and Shrubs). They must follow strict structural rules, ensuring that all concepts are connected to at least three other terms using descriptive, scientifically sound linking phrases. The sequence concludes with the formal, high-stakes Botany 2 Unit 3: Unit Assessment [Paper].

The Meriden Hub to Meriden Green Transformation: Students complete their unit synthesis by using their Botany 2 Unit 3: Summary Table and Concept Mapping Rubric to model the downtown Meriden ecosystem as an interconnected system. They trace the complete multi-scale loop: explaining how regional abiotic climate constraints (consistent precipitation and freezing winter line trends) establish the boundaries for local secondary succession tracks (how soil left behind from the demolished mall allowed pioneer annuals to rapidly emerge, compete, and transition through seral stages to form an engineered, flood-resilient park infrastructure).

Students often struggle with the structural format of systemic modeling, creating isolated concept clusters without clear interconnections or using vague phrases on their connector lines rather than informative, scientific linking phrases.
