Lesson Objective

Students will read and perform short musical exercises that include stepwise motion and simple intervals.

How do note patterns help musicians read music more efficiently?
How can identifying intervals improve accuracy while playing?

Pitch, interval, step, skip, pattern, measure

NCAS MU:Pr4.1.8a – Apply teacher-provided criteria to rehearse and refine musical performance.
NCAS MU:Pr4.2.8a – Demonstrate understanding of musical elements while performing.

Students examine short musical exercises and identify note patterns before playing. The teacher models how to recognize steps and skips on the staff. Students then perform the exercises individually or within their section.

Reading notes one at a time instead of recognizing patterns
Guessing intervals instead of identifying them on the staff

Provide simplified exercises for additional support
Allow slower tempo practice
Offer extended exercises for advanced students

  • Individual or sectional performance of exercises

  • Teacher checks for pitch accuracy and note recognition
