Lesson Objective
After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to explain the author’s purpose and point of view within a text.
Checklist for Author’s Purpose and Point of View:
In order to identify author’s purpose and point of view, note the following:
-descriptions that present a complicated process in plain language, which may indicate that an author is writing to explain
-facts, statistics, and graphic aids, as these indicate that an author is writing to inform
-the author’s use of emotional or figurative language, which may indicate the author is trying to persuade readers or stress an opinion
-the language the author uses, as figurative and emotional language can be clues to the author’s point of view on a subject or topic
-whether the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or points of view that contradict his or her own
To determine the author’s purpose and point of view in a text, consider the following questions:
-How does the author convey, or communicate, information in the text?
-Does the author use figurative or emotional language? What does this indicate?
-Are charts, graphs, maps, and other graphic aids included in the text? For what purpose?
-Does the author acknowledge contradictory or conflicting evidence or other points of view? -How does the author respond to or address them?
