After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text.

Checklist for Arguments and Claims:

In order to identify the speaker’s argument and claims, note the following:
- clues that reveal the author’s opinion in the title, opening remarks, or concluding statement
- declarative statements that come before or follow a speaker’s anecdote or story

To delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, do the following:
- note the information that the speaker introduces in sequential order
- describe the speaker’s argument in your own words

To evaluate the argument and specific claims, consider the following questions:
- Does the writer support each claim with reasoning and evidence?
- Do the writer’s claims work together to support the writer’s overall argument?
- Which claims are not supported, if any?
