Lesson Objective

Students will develop active listening skills to adjust their volume and tone in order to achieve balance within the ensemble.

What does it mean to “blend” in an ensemble?

How do I know if I am too loud or too soft?

How does listening improve group performance?

Dynamics

Melody vs. accompaniment

Performing: Perform with expression and technical accuracy in an ensemble

Responding: Analyze and evaluate musical performance

Connecting: Understand roles within a group setting

Students are introduced to ensemble awareness by learning to listen beyond their own instrument. They identify when they have melody or accompaniment and adjust their dynamics accordingly to create a balanced group sound.

Sectional playing (violins/violas separately)

Teacher modeling of balanced vs. unbalanced sound

Visual cues (hand signals for volume adjustments)

Advanced students: lead dynamic shaping within sections

  • Teacher observation during group playing

  • Student reflection: “Was I balanced? Why or why not?”

  • Peer feedback on blend and volume
