Lesson Objective

Students will apply their note-reading skills by performing short written exercises with correct pitches.

How can musicians recognize note patterns while reading music?
How does practice improve note-reading accuracy?

Pitch, interval, pattern, measure, rhythm

NCAS MU:Pr4.1.7a – Apply teacher-provided criteria to rehearse and refine musical performance.
NCAS MU:Pr4.2.7a – Demonstrate understanding of musical elements while performing.

Students practice reading short written exercises that include stepwise motion and small intervals. Before playing, students identify the notes in the exercise. They then perform the example individually or with their section.

Skipping notes when reading quickly
Guessing pitches rather than reading carefully

Provide exercises with fewer notes for struggling students
Allow slower tempo practice
Provide extended patterns for advanced players

  • Students perform short exercises

  • Teacher checks pitch accuracy and note recognition
