Lesson 8: Poetic Elements and Structure

Lesson Objective
Students will be able to analyze how a poem’s form or structure contributes to its meaning
In order to identify poetic elements and structure, note the following:
* the form and overall structure of the poem the rhyme, rhythm and meter, if present
* other sound elements, such as: alliteration: the repetition of initial consonant sounds, as with the s sound in “Cindy sweeps the sand” consonance: the repetition of consonant sounds in the middle and ends of words, as with the t sound in “little bats in the attic” assonance: the repetition of vowel sounds in words, as with the long e sound in “dreams of bees and sheep” lines and stanzas in the poem that suggest its meaning ways that the poem’s form or structure connects to the poem’s meaning
To analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure contributes to its meaning, consider the following questions:
* What poetic form does the poet use?
* What is the structure?
* How do the lines and stanzas and their length affect the meaning?
* How does the form and structure contribute to the poem’s meaning?
