Lesson 12: Informational Text Structure

Lesson Objective
Students will be able to analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.
In order to determine the overall structure of a text, note the following:
* the topic(s) and how the author organizes information about
* the topic(s) patterns in a section of text that reveal the text structure, such as: sequences, including the order of events or steps in a process problems and their solutions cause-and-effect relationships comparisons
* the overall structure of the text and how each section contributes to the development of ideas
To analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas, use the following questions as a guide:
* What organizational pattern does the author use?
* How does it reveal the text structure used to present information?
* How does a particular section fit into the overall structure of the text?
* How does it contribute to the whole and the development of the author’s ideas?
* In what ways does the text structure contribute to the development of ideas in the text?
