After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to determine the meanings of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including connotative meanings.

What is the genre or subject of the text? How does that affect the possible meaning of a word or phrase?
Does the word create a positive, negative, or neutral emotion?
What synonyms or alternative phrasing help you describe the connotative meaning of the word?
