Lesson Objective

Students will be able to analyze how dramatic elements and structure contribute to the meaning and message of the play.

In order to identify the dramatic elements and structure of a drama, note the following:
* the form of the drama, such as comedy or tragedy
* how the acts and scenes advance the plot
* the setting of the play and how it affects the characters and plot
* the language of the play as spoken by characters the use of dramatic conventions such as soliloquy, when a character speaks his or her thoughts aloud directly to the audience while alone on stage asides, when a character shares private thoughts with the audience when other characters are on stage the information in stage directions, including lighting, sound, and set, as well as details about characters, including exits and entrances

To analyze how a drama’s form or structure contributes to its meaning, consider the following questions:
-How does the use of dialogue and stage directions reveal aspects of the characters and contribute to the play’s meaning? -How is each act or scene structured?
-How do characters enter and leave, how do they speak to each other, and what happens as a result?
-How do stage directions contribute to the dramatic elements of the drama?
