Lesson Objective

Students will analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.

To analyze how an author establishes, develops, and contrasts different points of view of different characters or narrators in a text, consider the following questions:

Is the narrator or speaker objective, or does he or she mislead the reader? How?

What is the narrator’s or the speaker’s point of view? Is the narrator or speaker “all-knowing,” or omniscient?

Is the narrator or speaker limited to revealing the thoughts and feelings of one character?

How does the narrator or speaker reveal thoughts about the events or the other characters? How do the experiences or cultural background of the narrator affect his or her thoughts?

How does the author reveal or convey different points of view in the story?

How do these different points of view compare and contrast with one another?
