Lesson Objective

Students will be able to determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text.

In order to identify two or more central ideas in a text, note the following:
* the central or main idea, or ideas, if explicitly stated
* when each central idea appears
* key details in the text that indicate the author’s point(s) or message(s)
* ways that the author uses details to develop a central idea

To determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, consider the following questions:
* What main ideas do the paragraphs develop?
* Where do you see more than one central idea for the text?
* How does the author use details to develop central ideas?
* How does the author develop these ideas over the course of the text?
* How might I objectively summarize the text, including the central ideas?
