Lesson Objective

Students will experiment with different ways to produce a variety of sounds and dynamics on percussion instruments.

How can percussion instruments create different sounds?

How does changing dynamics affect the music?

Dynamics, loud, soft, articulation, sound quality

NAfME 2.1: Perform in an ensemble with appropriate dynamics and balance

MU:Pr4.2.6a: Perform music with expression

Students experiment with different striking techniques and dynamic levels to explore the range of sounds percussion instruments can produce. The lesson encourages creativity and listening.

Students may think percussion instruments only produce one type of sound.

Students may believe louder playing always sounds better.

Demonstrate multiple sound examples on each instrument.

Advanced students experiment with combining sounds to create short patterns.

  • Teacher observation of students demonstrating dynamic control.

  • Students perform a short pattern showing at least two different dynamic levels.
