Description: Students learn to identify note values and practice clapping/stepping rhythms. Then they notate simple rhythms individually and in small groups.

Purpose: Introduce foundational music reading skills necessary for group singing.

DOK Level: 2 – Skill/Concept (identifying, applying rhythmic notation)

Use visual aids and color-coded notes for beginners.

Allow students to vocalize rhythms (“ta” and “ti-ti”) before writing.

Pair students to support each other in rhythm exercises.

  • Students accurately clap or vocalize a given rhythm.

  • Written rhythm exercises are checked for accuracy.
