Lesson Objective

Students will produce a clear, sustained tone and match pitch individually and in small groups.

How can I hear if I am singing the correct pitch?

What strategies help me stay in tune with others?

Pitch

Tone quality

Solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol)

Matching pitch

MU:Pr4.1.6a – Singing alone and with others with expression

MU:Cr2.1.6a – Experimenting with pitch and tone

Description: Students sing sustained tones, gradually increasing difficulty to matching short melodies. Introduce solfege for pitch recognition. Practice in pairs and small groups for collaborative pitch matching.

Purpose: Build foundational listening and vocal control skills.

DOK Level: 2 – Skill/Concept (using listening skills to adjust pitch)

Use visual pitch guides (keyboard, apps, or hand signs).

Provide extra support through call-and-response exercises.

Pair stronger singers with developing singers for modeling.

  • Teacher may observe pitch matching in small groups.

  • Students may self-assess using hand signals for “in tune” or “needs adjustment.”

  • Students sing solfege patterns to show demonstration of singing in tune.
