Lesson Objective
Students will be able to interpret primary source laws from Hammurabi’s Code by identifying the intended protection of the law and the disproportionate impact it had on different social groups
How does a written law code help a king control people who live hundreds of miles away?
In what ways did the Code of Hammurabi protect the weak, and in what ways did it reinforce inequality?
Empire: A large territory where several groups of people are ruled by a single powerful leader.
Code of Hammurabi: A collection of 282 laws carved into a stone pillar; the first major attempt to standardize a society's laws.
Justice: The use of laws to fairly judge and punish crimes.
Stele: An upright stone slab or pillar, often bearing an inscription or design.
