Lesson Objective

1. Students will develop a model that uses magnetic fields to explain the cause-and-effect relationship between the magnet and the coil.

2. Demonstrate how "like poles" change the field shape to create a repulsive (pushing) force.

3. Demonstrate how "opposite poles" change the field shape to create an attractive (pulling) force.

4. Ask investigative questions about how these non-touching forces are strong enough to create the sounds we hear.

How can we use magnetic fields to explain interactions at a distance between the magnet and the coil?

Description:
Students will build their first complete model to explain how energy and forces move between the speaker’s magnet and the wire coil. They will use their knowledge of magnetic fields to explain why the speaker moves in certain ways without any parts touching.

Purpose:
To connect "invisible" science to the "visible" movement of the speaker. Students are moving from observing individual parts to understanding the entire system and how flipping a magnet or a battery changes the whole outcome.

DOK level 3

Visual Learners: Students will use "Force Arrows" on their models to show the direction of the push or pull based on the field shapes they draw.

Hands-On Learners: Students will use a physical "Magnet-Coil" set to verify their model’s predictions in real-time.

Vocabulary Support: We will provide a "Bridge Phrase" list to help students link ideas

  • The Initial System Model: Assess student drawings to see if they include the magnetic fields between the parts, not just the parts themselves.

  • Explanation of "The Flip": Students will explain in writing or verbally how changing the orientation of a magnet physically changes the shape of the invisible field.

  • Formative Assessment
