Lesson 6: The Tournament
Duration of Days: 2
Lesson Objective
Students will participate in a high-pressure, elimination-style tournament following World Archery (FITA) rules.
How does social pressure change your physical shot cycle?
End: A set number of arrows shot (usually 3 or 6) before scoring and retrieving.
Spider: The very center of the X-ring, used as a tie-breaker.
FITA (World Archery): The international governing body that sets the rules for Olympic archery.
4.12.2 Selects and participates in physical activities that meet the need for social interaction.
4.12.5 Chooses and successfully participates in self-selected physical activity at a level that is appropriately challenging.
(DOK 3) Draw conclusions about your performance by comparing your practice scores to tournament scores.
(DOK 2) Summarize the official whistle commands and scoring protocols used in professional play.
Archery is a masterclass in ballistics, biomechanics, and mindfulness. The focus required mirrors the "flow state" used by professionals in high-stress fields like medicine or aviation. By mastering the physics of arrow flight—known as the Archer’s Paradox—students engage with the same engineering principles used in aerospace and mechanical design.
You can't get hurt with the equipment we have at school.
Different sized bows will be offered.
Different distances to the target.
Students will use their final scorecard and reflect in a journal entry about their experience in the Archery Unit.
Advanced recurve/compound bows, carbon/aluminum arrows, 3D targets, paper tuning kits, chronometers, finger tabs/slings, T-squares (for brace height), and journals.
