Lesson 1: Carbohydrates - Simple vs Complex
Duration of Days: 2
Lesson Objective
Students will identify the molecular differences between monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
Why does the body treat a piece of fruit (fructose) differently than a piece of white bread (starch)?
simple, complex, glycogen, glucose, metabolism
3.12.4 Use valid and reliable sources of health information, products, services, and other resources.
(DOK 1) Identify the three monosaccharides and the three disaccharides .
(DOK 2) Compare the roles of glycogen in the liver versus glycogen stored in the muscles.
Carbohydrates are the primary "gasoline" for the brain and muscles. Understanding the difference between a "sugar crash" from simple sugars and the sustained energy from complex starches helps students maintain focus in the classroom and stamina on the field.
Carbohydrates are just sugars.
Carbohydrates make you gain weight.
Use skeleton outline
Use of computers
Use graphics/posters/pictures
"Sugar Sort" activity – Students categorize 10 common snacks based on their fiber, sugar, and starch content using nutrition labels.
Food labels, fiber supplement samples, starch/sugar diagrams, blood glucose charts.
