Lesson Objective

Students will categorize vitamins by solubility and identify the specific roles of major and trace minerals.

Why is Vitamin C essential for the absorption of Iron?

Fat-Soluble (A,D,E,K), Water-Soluble (B,C), Trace Minerals, Major Minerals, Electrolytes, Dehydration, Bioavailability.

5.12.2 Determine when and why health-related situations require the application of a thoughtful decision-making process.

(DOK 1) Distinguish between a "major mineral" and a "trace mineral" based on the 5-gram rule.
(DOK 2) Explain the symptoms and progression of dehydration in the human body.

Micronutrients are the "spark plugs" of the body. You only need them in tiny amounts, but without them, energy production stops. Understanding water balance is also the most immediate way for an athlete to prevent fatigue and "delirium" during intense training.

Vitamins and minerals are not important.
You need to drink gallons of water

Use skeleton outline
Use of computers
Use graphics/posters/pictures

Students will write a journal entry from an athlete's perspective about experiencing a cramp in the calf muscle during a sporting event.

Multi-vitamin labels, mineral density charts, water jugs for visualization.
