Lesson 3: Trekking & Pacing Strategies
Duration of Days: 1
Lesson Objective
Students will maintain a Target Heart Rate (THR) for 20 minutes while navigating a pre-set outdoor course involving varied terrain.
How can adventure racing be used to improve cardiovascular health?
Aerobic base, Interval, Terrain, Cadence
Standard 2: Applies knowledge related to movement and fitness concepts.
(DOK 1) What is the difference between a sprint pace and a "trekking" pace for a 3-hour race?
(DOK 3) Predict how your team’s energy levels would change if you chose a steep direct path versus a flat, longer path.
Adventure racing mirrors the "real world" by requiring participants to manage limited resources, communicate under physical stress, and navigate unfamiliar territory. It teaches students that the fastest person isn't always the winner; the person who can plan, adapt, and work with their team usually comes out on top.
Adventure Racing is boring because it isn't a sport
