Lesson Objective

Students will compare the financial benefits of hourly wages (overtime pay) versus the stability of a set salary.

Is $50,000 a year better than $22 an hour?
What happens to my check if I work 45 hours?

NRT.Q.1
CRP.10

Description: Students calculate a weekly check for an hourly worker at 40 hours vs. 50 hours (using "Time and a Half"). They then compare that to a salaried worker’s weekly take-home.
Purpose: To understand "Work-Life Balance" math. Students learn that while a salary is guaranteed, hourly work allows for "hustle" pay through overtime.
DOK Level: 3

Provide an "Overtime Multiplier" table (ex. If base is $15, OT is $22.50).
Visual: Use a bar graph showing "Hours Worked" vs. "Total Pay" to see the "jump" after 40 hours.

The "Choice Challenge"—Students choose between two job offers (one hourly, one salary) and justify their choice based on calculated monthly totals.
