Lesson Objective

Students will simplify rational expressions by factoring and canceling common factors.

• How do we simplify rational expressions?
• What can we cancel?
• Why can we cancel common factors?
• When is a rational expression fully simplified?

Simplify, factor, common factor, cancel, lowest terms

CCSS.MATH.9.A.SSE.A.2

Description: Students simplify rational expressions by factoring the numerator and denominator, then canceling common factors. They learn that they can only cancel factors, not individual terms. Purpose: To develop procedural fluency in simplifying rational expressions. DOK Level: 2-3 (Application)

• Factor first: Provide factored forms initially, then require factoring
• For struggling learners: Simplify expressions with obvious common factors
• For advanced learners: Include expressions requiring multiple factoring steps
• Color-coding: Highlight common factors to be canceled

• Observation: Can students factor correctly?

• Worksheet: Simplify 5 rational expressions

• Factor-first task: Factor, then simplify

• Check-your-work: Verify by substituting a value

• Factoring review guides

• Simplification practice worksheets

• Factor-first templates

• Verification worksheet
