Lesson Objective

Students will identify polynomials and their parts (terms, coefficients, degree).

• What is a polynomial?
• What are the parts of a polynomial?
• What does "degree" mean?
• How are polynomials different from other expressions?

Polynomial, term, coefficient, degree, monomial, binomial, trinomial, leading term

CCSS.MATH.9.A.SSE.A.1

Description: Polynomials are introduced as sums of terms with variables raised to whole number powers. Students identify parts: terms (individual addends), coefficients (numbers multiplying variables), and degree (highest power). They classify polynomials by number of terms (monomial, binomial, trinomial) and by degree (linear, quadratic, cubic). Purpose: To build vocabulary and understanding of polynomial structure. DOK Level: 1-2 (Recall and Understanding)

• Color-coding: Use different colors for each term, coefficient, and degree indicator
• For struggling learners: Focus on polynomials with 2-3 terms; use simple coefficients
• For advanced learners: Include polynomials with multiple variables or higher degrees
• Anchor chart: Display polynomial vocabulary and examples visually

• Observation: Can students identify terms and coefficients?

• Sorting activity: Classify polynomials by number of terms and degree

• Labeling worksheet: Identify parts of given polynomials

• Exit ticket: Explain what makes something a polynomial

• Polynomial examples (written and on cards)

• Sorting worksheet

• Labeling templates

• Anchor chart for polynomial vocabulary
