Lesson Objective

Students will identify domain and range from tables and graphs.

• What inputs can we use? (Domain)
• What outputs can we get? (Range)
• Does every number work as an input?
• What are the limits?

Domain, range, input, output, set, all possible values

CCSS.MATH.8.F.A.1

Description: Domain (all possible inputs) and range (all possible outputs) are introduced using concrete examples. Students identify domain and range from input/output tables and graphs. Real-world contexts (ex. "How many students can we serve?" Domain: 1-30 students; Range: amounts of food) make it meaningful. Purpose: To develop understanding of constraints and possibilities in functions. DOK Level: 2 (Application)

• Real-world contexts: Use relatable examples (age, height, cost)
• For struggling learners: Provide pre-labeled domain and range; ask them to identify from a list
• For advanced learners: Include functions with restricted domains/ranges
• Visual representation: Use separate lists or circles for domain and range

• Observation: Can students identify domain and range?

• Worksheet: Given a table, list domain and range

• Graph task: Identify domain and range from a plotted graph

• Real-world problem: Identify domain and range in a context

• Domain/range identification worksheets

• Real-world context cards

• Tables and graphs with domain/range to identify
