Lesson 3: Graphing Functions
Duration of Days: 4
Lesson Objective
Students will graph functions by plotting points from input/output tables on a coordinate plane.
• How do we turn a table into a graph?
• What do the points on a graph tell us?
• Why do function points form a pattern?
• What can we learn from a graph?

Description: Students take input/output tables and plot the ordered pairs (input, output) on coordinate planes. They observe that points often form a line or pattern, connecting algebraic and visual representations. Purpose: To help students see the connection between tables, equations, and graphs. DOK Level: 2-3 (Application)
• Step-by-step: Provide tables already converted to ordered pairs first
• For struggling learners: Use only Quadrant I; provide pre-drawn grids with axis labels
• For advanced learners: Include all quadrants; ask them to identify if points form a line
• Color-coding: Use different colors for each point or pair
• Observation: Can students correctly plot points?
• Worksheet: Given a table, plot 5-6 points on a graph
• Reverse task: Given a graph, write the ordered pairs
• Extension: Predict where the next point would be
• Input/output tables (from Lesson 2.2)
• Coordinate plane worksheets
• Ordered pair cards
• Graph paper
