Lesson Objective

Find the distance between two points.

How is the distance determined between two coordinates on a coordinate plane?
Why is the distance always a positive quantity?

G.CO.12
Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software).

The distance between the endpoints of a line segment on a number line is the absolute value of their difference. The Distance Formula or the Pythagorean Theorem is used to calculate ehe distance between two points on the coordinate plane.
Mathematically proficient students make sense of the relationship of quantities in problem situations.
Mathematically proficient students plan a solution pathway.

What assumption must you make to approximate the distance from St. Louis to Columbus?

Students approaching grade level can be given practice problems in small groups to work with other students or directly with the teacher. Students can work on Pythagorean Theorem problems until they're ready to apply the theorem to the Distance Formula.
Students beyond grade level can make deeper connections in the following way: students can compare driving distances (using direction apps) and "as the crow flies" distances to determine which are found using the distance formula vs. mapping programs.
