The Distributive Property can be used to evaluate and simplify expressions. This property permits a factor outside the parentheses to be distributed to each term inside the parentheses. When applying the Distributive Property to an algebraic expression, the coefficients of like terms can be combined and the expressions can be simplified.

Julio walks 5 days a week. Each day he walks at a fast rate for 7 minutes and cools down for 2 minutes. Use the Distributive Property to write and evaluate an expression that determines the total numbe of minutes Julio walks each week.

To make it easier for students to identify the coeefiecient of expressions, rewrite the expression to show 1/denomintor * the numerator.

Some students are confused when an expression is presented with the parentheses first, such as (4-3)6. Suggest thats students use the Commutative Property of Multiplication to rewrite the expression as 6(4-3) to avoid confusion.

If students have difficulty using the Distributive Property have them use algebra tiles to find products for problems such as 2(x+1) or 5(x+2). Have students work in pairs. Point out that one of the quantities being multiplied goes on the left side of the mat, and the other goes onthe top. Using algebra tiles will help students visualize the Distributive Property.
