CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2

Description: The teacher introduces variables as "empty boxes." Given an expression (e.g., 2x + 3) and a value (x = 4), students write "4" on a physical sticky note, place it over the 'x', and apply order of operations to solve.
Purpose: To demystify letters in math and teach the foundational substitution skill needed for real-world formulas (like hourly wage calculations).
DOK Level: DOK 2 (Skill/Concept) - Interpreting a visual representation and applying a multi-step routine.

Use physical sticky notes to physically cover the letter with the number; provide expressions with only one variable to start.

Adapted Quiz: The expression and the substitution are provided (ex.  3x where x=2). Students draw a line to the correct final evaluated number.

Small sticky notes, "empty box" expression templates.
