Lesson 3: 1.3 Order of Operations (No Exponents)
Duration of Days: 5
Lesson Objective
Students will solve multi-step arithmetic expressions using the MDAS sequence (Multiply/Divide, Add/Subtract)
Why does math need a specific set of rules for which operation to do first?

Simplify
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2.C
Description: Students will use highlighters to identify the very first operation to perform based on MDAS rules. They will calculate that single step, cross it out, and rewrite the simplified expression on the next line down inside a "V" shaped graphic organizer (pizza slice shape) until one number remains.
Purpose: To develop sequential processing and executive functioning skills by forcing step-by-step documentation.
DOK Level: DOK 2 (Skill/Concept) - Students make decisions about the sequence of steps and execute multiple procedures.
Provide graphic organizers that visually funnel down to a single box.
Adapted Quiz: 8 questions. The first step of each equation is already highlighted by the teacher. The student must complete the sequence in the provided "V" graphic organizer.
