After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to analyze the story structure of “The Cask of the Amontillado.”
1. What is the structure of the story? How do the author’s choices about the structure create effects as mystery, tension, or surprise?
2. How does the speed in which events take place impact the plot?
3. Are there parallel plots in the story? What do they reveal about the characters, settings, or overall theme?
4. How does the author manipulate time in the story? What effects does it have on the mystery, tension, or surprise the author creates?
5. How does the author use flashbacks or foreshadowing to build suspense, create mystery or reveal a character’s motivations?
