Lesson 3: Cutting Board Planning & Squaring
Duration of Days: 4
Lesson Objective
Students will unclamp their boards and plane them using the wood planer.
Students will square their boards using the miter saw.
How do we get the boards to be flat?
How can you get the board square on the ends?
What is needed in order to have this board be usable?
WM.03 Identify and describe the safe and appropriate use of various types of hand and power tools and machinery used for building.
WM.03.01 Identify, use, and maintain the following measuring, layout, and marking tools: steel rule, tape measure, combination square, sliding âTâ bevel, and compass.*(B8)
WM.03.08 Identify the proper use and function specialty machinery (e.g. drill presses. jointers. surface planers. table saws. power miter saws. band saws. scroll saws. and stationary sanders.*
WM.03.09 Identify proper use and function of the table and miter saws.*(B12)
WM.03.10 Explain and demonstrate correct use of planers.
WM.03.14 Select appropriate tools, procedures, and/or equipment.

WM.05 Describe and demonstrate the attributes of wood design.
WM.05.03 Design and create cabinet and wood products
Flatten and square a laminated hardwood cutting board. Allow students to demonstrate their ability to use a planner to flatten their board to a uniform thickness. They will then be able to square the ends using a miter saw.
Students will be able to create a design that aligns to their own personal ability and comfort level.
Students will plane their boards until flat.
Students will square off the boards using the miter saw.
