Lesson 2: Developing Radial & Curved Surfaces
Duration of Days: 1
Lesson Objective
Students will calculate the circumference of a circle to create the flat pattern development of a cylinder.
How do we turn a round object into a perfectly flat rectangle?
How does the "pi" formula apply to the length of our AutoCAD lines?
Circumference, Lateral Surface, Radial Line Development, pi
CT CADD.09.03: Create the development of a cylinder.
Students will use the circumference formula to determine the exact "Stretch-out" length of a cylinder. In AutoCAD, they will draft the rectangle and the circular bases, ensuring they are tangent to the correct edges.
Purpose: To apply mathematical formulas to geometric drafting for manufacturing.
DOK Level: 3.
Provide a "Circumference Calculator" cheat sheet; allow students to use the MEASURE or DIVIDE command in AutoCAD to verify lengths.
Successful CAD drawing of a cylindrical development that, when printed, fits a specific physical diameter.
Calculators, AutoCAD.
