Lesson Objective

Students will use the "Boxing-In" method to sketch complex shapes by starting with a solid bounding box.

How do you draw a shape if you don't know where the slanted lines start?

Why is it easier to "carve away" material than to draw a complex shape from scratch?

Bounding Box, Subtractive Method, Construction Lines, Object Lines.

CT CADD.04.02: Demonstrate the ability to create isometric pictorials.

Students draw a light "glass box" representing the maximum dimensions of an object, then "cut away" notches and slopes to find the final form.

Purpose: To maintain proportion and prevent "drifting" angles.

DOK Level: 3 (Strategic Thinking).

Use physical wooden blocks and have students physically trace the "box" around them with their fingers before sketching.

Sketching an "Isometric Staircase" or "Slotted Block" using the subtractive method.

3D wooden "puzzle" blocks, soft lead pencils (2B) for dark object lines.
