Lesson Objective

Students will apply precision trimming tools, manipulate clip timing, balance audio using the Essential Sound Panel, and design professional on-screen graphics.

Why trim a long clip and make several segments?

DVP.04 Production: Identify and describe the elements of production to effectively deliver a message.

Standard cutting leaves gaps; these tools maintain timeline integrity.
Ripple Edit Tool (B): Trim a clip’s edge and automatically move all following clips to close the gap.
Rolling Edit Tool (N): Move the edit point between two clips. Clip A gets longer while Clip B gets shorter, keeping the total sequence length the same.
Slip Tool (Y): Change the "In" and "Out" points of a clip without moving its position on the timeline. Perfect for fixing the timing of a specific action within a tight edit.

Students can edit the clips in many different ways.

Edit a 30-second "Interview Highlight."
    1. Sync & Clean: Import an interview clip, tag it as Dialogue, and use Repair to clean the audio.
    2. The Tighten-Up: Use the Ripple Edit tool to remove "umms" and "ahhs" without leaving black gaps.
    3. Visual Polish: Add one Slow Motion B-roll clip of the subject working.
    4. Identify: Add a Lower-Third graphic with the subject’s name and title.
    5. The Mix: Add background music and use Ducking so the voice is always clear.
