Lesson 2: SeaPerch Anatomy & Mission Objectives
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Students will identify all components of the SeaPerch kit and map them to functional robotic systems (Structural, Propulsion, and Control).
How does each part in the kit contribute to the ROV's survival or movement?
How do we translate a human movement on a joystick into a mechanical thrust underwater?
Thruster: The motor/propeller assembly that provides movement.
D-PDT Switch: Double Pole, Double Throw—the "brain" of the analog control box that reverses polarity.
Potting/Sealing: The method of making electronics waterproof.
Bill of Materials (BOM): The technical inventory of all parts required for the build.
ITEEA STEL-7R: Apply a broad range of making and troubleshooting skills through hands-on activities.
NGSS HS-ETS1-3: Evaluate a solution to a complex real-world problem based on prioritized criteria.
Description: A hands-on inventory lab and collaborative brainstorming session. Students unbox the kits, label parts, and work in teams to define their specific "Mission Profile" (e.g., Speed vs. Maneuverability).
Purpose: To move from abstract concepts to the physical hardware while building team organizational habits.
DOK Level: Level 3 (Strategic Thinking).
In this course, we recognize that students enter the lab with varying levels of technical experience. Our differentiation strategy employs a 'Scaffolded Autonomy' approach. We provide structured, step-by-step guidance for foundational concepts while offering open-ended, 'Design Challenge' extensions for advanced learners. By utilizing peer-mentorship models, diverse instructional media (visual, tactile, and digital), and flexible project pathways, we ensure every student can move from consumer to creator at their own pace.
The "Technical Inventory & Pitch": A two-part assessment. Part 1 is a visual ID quiz of the kit's hardware. Part 2 is a team "Mission Statement" presentation where they explain their ROV's name, its primary goal, and how they will organize their build to meet the deadline.
