Lesson 2: Angular Measure & Shop Math
Duration of Days: 1
Lesson Objective
SWBAT: Identify and classify angle types (acute, obtuse, reflex, right) used in technical drawings.
Measure and layout specific angles on a workpiece using a protractor to within ± 1°
Why are "centers of rotation" critical for moving machine parts?
How do complementary and supplementary angles help us find "hidden" information on a blueprint?
Rays, vertex, acute angle, obtuse angle, reflex angle, right angle, complementary, supplementary, ? (Theta), protractor.
CTE.MFG.B.07 (Apply geometric principles)
CCSS.Math.4.MD.C.5 (Recognize angles as geometric shapes).
Students learn to define and measure angles. The purpose is to master the use of protractors and understand how angularity affects part fit and machine setup.
DOK Level: 2 (Skill/Concept)
Support: Use a "miter saw" visual aid to show how angles are physically cut in material.
Extension: Introduce the concept of "Degrees, Minutes, Seconds" for high-precision angular measurement.
"Angle Identification Lab" – Students use protractors to measure 10 different angles on a "mystery" part drawing.
