Lesson Objective

Students will be able to explore age-appropriate and culturally appropriate developmental expectations for children, focusing on the impact of gender roles and stereotypes.

How do you think culture influences a child's development?

How do you think gender roles shape the way we view children's capabilities and behaviors?

Developmental Stages: Understanding physical, cognitive, social, and emotional milestones for various age groups.

Cultural Appropriateness: Recognizing how cultural contexts influence developmental expectations and practices.

Gender Roles: Exploring how societal norms and stereotypes shape perceptions of children's abilities and behavior.

Stereotypes: Discussion on how stereotypes can limit opportunities for children based on gender.

National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Education: FCS Standard 1.1.2 - Analyze the role of culture in shaping individual and family needs.

In small groups, students will analyze scenarios of children at different developmental stages, discussing how gender roles might influence expectations in each case.

Students are shown books, toys, and other materials that may influence stereotyping. Conversely, they are shown material that uses language to promote an all-inclusive classroom, such as "Fireman becomes Firefighter."

Encouraging students to question and analyze the expectations and stereotypes they observe in their families and communities.

Material (toys) students play with at young ages will determine their sexuality later in life.
