Lesson Objective

students will be able to explain the concept of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) and articulate its importance in education for all children.

What does it mean to teach in a way that is appropriate for a child's development?

Are age and development the same?

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP): DAP refers to teaching methods that are based on how children develop and learn, ensuring that activities are suitable for their age and individual needs.

FCS Standard 1.1: Analyze the importance of developmentally appropriate practices in education.
FCS Standard 7.2: Evaluate the role of effective teaching strategies in promoting a positive learning environment for diverse learners.

Divide students into small groups and provide scenarios where they must identify whether a teaching practice is developmentally appropriate or not.
Encourage each group to discuss their reasoning and share their findings with the class.
Monitor group discussions, providing scaffolding questions such as:
"Why do you think this practice is appropriate?"
"What age group would benefit from this strategy?"

Importance of DAP: DAP promotes optimal learning experiences, supports diverse learners, and fosters a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Some students may believe that DAP is only relevant for early childhood education, so address this by highlighting its application in secondary education.
