Connections / Culture / Comparison
Interpersonal Communication
Students will take their knowledge and use it to interact with classmates. They will need to think on their feet, changing between verb tenses. This requires high level thinking.
DOK 1: The teacher says a subject and an adjective (e.g., "Le ragazze... simpatico"). Students must immediately adjust the adjective to the correct form ("Le ragazze sono simpatiche")
DOK 2: Give students a sentence about a male student (Lui è studioso). They must "shift" it to a group of females (Loro sono studiose). In Italian, shifting between -o/-a/-i/-e and the invariable -e adjectives (like intelligente) requires significant Mental Shifting.
DOK 3: Provide short descriptions of famous Italian figures or literary characters. Students must choose the most "strategic" adjectives to describe them using essere and justify their choice with evidence (e.g., "Lui è coraggioso perché...").
DOK 4: Students choose an Italian brand (e.g., Ferrari, Gucci, Barilla) and write a profile describing the "personality" of the brand using essere + adjectives. They must explain how these adjectives appeal to a specific demographic.
Academic level students will spend more time using just "io" and "tu" before moving on to describe others (lui/lei), accelerated students will move to this sooner.
