Connections / Culture / Comparison
Interpretive Communication
Interpersonal Communication
Students will engage in authentic Italian weather reports to interpret weather patterns, and further, compare them to weather patterns in their own city. They will grapple with the question: what might be the best time of year for someone to visit Italy based on weather?
DOK 1 Students sort images of clothing items into the four seasons.
DOK 2: Students are given a destination and a 5-day forecast. They are presented with a list of "distractor" items (e.g., a heavy coat for a trip to Rome in August). They must select only the appropriate gear.
DOK 3: Students plan a semester abroad in a specific region (e.g., the Italian Alps). They must research the average seasonal temperatures and create an organized "Essentials" list.
DOK 4: Students investigate how the "harvest seasons" for specific cultural products (e.g., grapes for Italian wine) are being affected by changing weather patterns. They must synthesize this info and present their findings.
Academic level students will work with weather vocabulary in isolation, be provided sentence starters, and images to help vocabulary acquisition.
