Connections / Culture / Comparison
Interpretive Communication
Interpersonal Communication
Students will grapple with the concept of "having" years in other languages, instead of "being" years in English. Higher level thinking is necessary.
DOK 1: Teacher says a string of complex numbers (e.g., years, large prices); students write them down.
DOK 2: Provide a simple bar graph in the target language showing demographic data (e.g., populations of different Spanish-speaking countries). Students must answer "how many" or "which is greater" questions.
DOK 3: Provide students with a pre-written "receipt" or "ledger" that contains mathematical or linguistic errors in the numbers. Students must find the errors, explain why they are wrong, and correct them. This addresses the "Self-Monitoring" and "Error Analysis" indicators in your look-fors.
DOK 4: Students research a local charity or a global issue (e.g., clean water access in a specific region) and calculate the impact of different donation amounts. This requires "application to real work" and "investigation,"
-Academic classes will engage with only numbers 1-10 in the first part of the lesson, and master that before progressing to 11-20, and so on.
