1.2 Understanding language
Recognize and identify masculine and feminine nouns. Recognize and identify singular and plural nouns. Compare how these may differ from English. Interpret the difference between masculine/feminine singular/plural nouns. Apply knowledge to create sentences the follow the rules of gender and number.
DOK 1: The "Vowel Ending" Sprint (Working Memory): The teacher calls out a singular noun (e.g., ragazzo). Students must immediately shout back the plural (ragazzi). To increase rigor, use a string of three nouns (e.g., libro, casa, fiore) and have students provide the plural string (libri, case, fiori).
DOK 2: Students are given a noun and a list of adjectives. They must "shift" the adjective to match the noun (e.g., la mela + rosso = la mela rossa). Shifting between gender and number simultaneously practices Mental Shifting.
DOK 3: Provide a complex sentence with intentional errors in agreement (e.g., I professori intelligente sono simpatiche). Students must find the three errors and justify the corrections based on the "Grammar Hierarchy."
DOK 4: Students investigate the current linguistic debate in Italy regarding the use of the "schwa" (?) or asterisk (*) to create gender-neutral endings. They compare this to the use of "they/them" in English.
Provide comprehensible input/ Students fold a sheet of paper in half, on the left side write
Singular and on the right side Plural. Have them create a list of classroom objects they see and write each object's singular and plural forms in the appropriate column
Teacher selected formative and summative assessments.
