Lesson Objective

Students will use adverbial conjunctions (ESCAPA) to express the requirements for social and political change.
Students will use the Past Subjunctive to narrate the "ideas" and "desires" of figures like Violeta Parra or Salvador Allende.
Students will utilize Comparatives and Superlatives to argue why certain ideas are "more effective" or "the most just" in a given context.

Why is it important to use the subjunctive after a menos que when talking about politics? (e.g., Nothing changes unless we act).

When looking at the work of Miguel Littín, what did he want the audience to feel? (Él quería que la gente viera...)

How do you use comparatives to contrast the "Magical Realism" of Isabel Allende with the "Social Realism" of other Chilean artists?

WL.3 - WL3. Exhibit understanding of content in a variety of formats.

Description

Subjunctive with Adverbial Clauses: Using conjunctions like para que (so that), antes de que (before), and a menos que (unless) to show purpose, time, and condition.

The Past Subjunctive (Imperfect Subjunctive): Moving the subjective mood into the past to discuss historical hopes, old commands, or hypothetical "if" scenarios.

Comparatives & Superlatives: Using structures like más/menos... que and el/la mejor to evaluate and rank ideas, artists, and political systems.

Purpose
The purpose of these structures is to facilitate critical evaluation. It aims to:

Explain the conditions for justice (e.g., "There is no peace unless there is justice").

Discuss historical context using the Past Subjunctive (e.g., "The people wanted a leader who would listen").

Support the unit's goal of giving an opinion on what is fair by using superlatives to define the "most important" rights.

The ESCAPA Acronym: Provide a bookmark or desk tent with the ESCAPA conjunctions (En caso de que, Sin que, Con tal de que, Antes de que, Para que, A menos que) to prompt subjunctive use.

The "Drop the -ron" Rule: Provide a visual step-by-step guide for the Past Subjunctive: 1. Preterite Ellos 2. Drop -ron 3. Add -ra.
