Lesson Objective

Students will form and use the Future Tense (regular and irregular) to discuss long-term environmental trends and global challenges.

Students will use the Conditional Mood to propose solutions to ecological problems and express what they would do in hypothetical situations.

Students will begin to use "Si" (If) clauses (specifically Si + Present + Future) to describe cause-and-effect relationships in nature.

How does your message change when you switch from "We will save the ocean" (Future) to "We would save the ocean" (Conditional)?

If you had a million dollars to help nature, what is the first thing you would buy or build?

WL.1A - 1A. Ask and respond in writing and/or speaking to questions about familiar topics based on their own lives and interests.

Description
The structures in Unit 5 focus on probability and hypotheticals. While the Future Tense is used for things that are likely to happen (e.g., "The glaciers will melt"), the Conditional is the language of dreams, possibilities, and polite suggestions (e.g., "We should recycle more"). This unit also cleans up the 12 common irregular stems (like tendr-, saldr-, pondr-) that apply to both the Future and the Conditional.

Purpose
The purpose of these structures is to move students into environmental and social advocacy.

DOK 1: Recall Conjugate verbs like hacer, decir, and querer in the future and conditional stems.
DOK 2: Skill/Concept Transform present-tense sentences about the environment into the future to show predictions.
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking Create a "Green Manifesto" where students use the Conditional to suggest hypothetical changes to school policy.
DOK 4: Extended Thinking Debate the ethics of oil drilling in the Amazon, using the Future to predict economic gains and the Conditional to warn of ecological risks.

The "Same Stem" Anchor Chart: Create a visual aid showing that the Future and Conditional share the exact same irregular stems (e.g., pud-, habr-, sabr-), but different "tails" (endings).

Sentence Starters: Provide frames for hypothetical thinking:

En el futuro, el mundo será... (In the future, the world will be...)

Para ayudar a la naturaleza, yo [verbo en condicional]... (To help nature, I would...)
