Duration of Days: 6
Lesson Objective

Students will use the Conditional to propose how they would balance economic growth (oil/mining) with environmental protection in the Andes.
How does living in a mountainous "cordillera" change a person's opinion about nature compared to someone living on the coast?
How does an artist like Guayasamín use his work to discuss the "desafíos mundiales" (global challenges) of poverty and injustice?
WL1. Students understand and engage in written and spoken language.
WL4. Understand and compare cultural differences.
Description
The Imagina cultural section focuses on the Andean region, specifically Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. It covers the geography of the Andes—the world's longest mountain range—and its impact on climate, agriculture (coffee and cocoa), and urban life. In Unit 5, the Galería de creadores features a diverse group of visionaries from Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. These individuals use their global platforms to influence politics, celebrate Andean heritage, and advocate for social and environmental change.
Purpose
The purpose is to contextualize environmental challenges within a specific geographic reality.
DOK 1: Recall Identify the major exports and geographic landmarks of the Northern Andean countries.
DOK 2: Skill/Concept Compare the "magical realism" of García Márquez with the "social realism" of Guayasamín’s paintings.
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking Analyze the tension between Venezuela’s oil wealth and its environmental health; say what you would do to diversify the economy.
DOK 4: Extended Thinking Create a "Sustainable Tourism" campaign for the Galapagos Islands, predicting how these efforts will save the species by 2075.
The "Country Profile" Template: Provide a structured worksheet for researching Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela with prompts for: Capital, Natural Wonder, Famous Creator, and Main Environmental Challenge.
