Lesson Objective

Students will be able to analyze how Belli uses a historical framework to tell a family story of survival, reinvention, and migration.

Why do some families choose to hide their past, and how does that silence create uncertainty for the next generation?

How does the protagonist's move from Europe to Nicaragua illustrate the unit theme of Generaciones en movimiento?

The "Fever": In the context of the story, is "memory" a medicine that heals or a "fever" that makes one suffer?

WL2. Interpretive Communication Understand and interpret written and/or spoken language on a variety of topics.

WL.2A - 2A. Understand main ideas, topics and specific information on a variety of authentic auditory or written materials.

WL.2B - 2B. Interprets information from written and/or spoken text.

Description
Inspired by a legend in Belli's own family, the novel (or excerpt) follows the journey of a European nobleman who flees a scandal, fakes his own death, and seeks a new life in Nicaragua. It is a story of "fevers"—both literal tropical illnesses and the metaphorical "fevers" of passion, memory, and regret. It connects perfectly to the unit's focus on Generaciones en movimiento as it explores how one person's decision to move across the world creates a brand new family line and history.

Purpose
The purpose of this text is to bridge the gap between historical fact and family legend.

DOK 1: Recall Identify the protagonist's reasons for fleeing Europe and the specific setting in Nicaragua.
DOK 2: Skill/Concept Describe the physical and emotional "fevers" mentioned in the text and explain what they represent for the protagonist.
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking Analyze how the protagonist’s "erased" past creates a generation gap or a sense of uncertainty for his descendants.
DOK 4: Extended Thinking Write a letter from the protagonist to his future descendants using the Past Subjunctive to explain his hopes for the new "generation in motion" he is starting.

The Character Map: Provide a "Before and After" graphic organizer to track the protagonist's transformation (Name, Social Status, Hopes) as he moves from Europe to Nicaragua.

Key Vocabulary Scaffolding: Pre-teach specific "fever" related terms (el delirio, el rastro, el antepasado, el azar) before reading the excerpt.
