Description
This section transitions from personal vocabulary to broader cultural analysis, focusing on the historical and contemporary presence of Latinos in the United States. The Enfoques reading provides a demographic and cultural overview of the Latino population. The Galería de creadores highlights specific influential figures in fields such as literatura, diseño, cine, and moda, showing how their personality traits and heritage fueled their success.
Purpose
The purpose of this section is to provide a real-world context for the unit's themes of identity and expression.
DOK 1: Recall Identify the countries of origin for the creators mentioned in the Galería and list the major U.S. cities with high Latino populations mentioned in the text.
DOK 2: Skill/Concept Categorize the creators by their field (e.g., moda, literatura) and summarize how their specific personality traits contributed to their success.
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking Analyze how a creator's work reflects the sentimientos (feelings) of the Latino experience in the U.S., using specific examples from their biography or art.
DOK 4: Extended Thinking Conduct an original investigation of a modern Latino figure in the U.S. not in the book; justify their inclusion in a future Galería by connecting their influence to the unit's themes of culture and identity.
Scaffolding: Provide a list of "Pre-Approved Sources" in Spanish (like CNN en Español or People en Español) to ensure they find level-appropriate reading material.
Extension: Challenge high-flyers to find an English-language interview with their creator and translate/summarize the "sentimientos" expressed into Spanish for the class.
