Lesson 4: Estructura - El Condicional / El Condicional Perfecto / El Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto de Subjuntivo
Duration of Days: 20
Lesson Objective
SWBAT conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the Conditional to express courtesy and hypothetical outcomes (e.g., "¿Podrías ayudarme?").
SWBAT form the Conditional Perfect using the future of haber + past participle to discuss missed opportunities or "what would have been" (e.g., "Habría ido al estreno").
SWBAT use the Past Subjunctive in "Si" clauses to establish hypothetical conditions (e.g., "Si tuviera dinero, compraría el cuadro").
¿Qué harías si fueras un artista famoso? (What would you do if you were a famous artist?)
¿Qué habrías cambiado de la última película que viste? (What would you have changed about the last movie you saw?)
¿Si tuvieras que elegir entre el teatro y el cine, qué preferirías? (If you had to choose between theater and cinema, what would you prefer?)
Standard 1.1 (Interpersonal): Negotiating hypothetical situations with a partner using "Si" clauses.
Standard 4.1 (Language Comparisons): Comparing the English use of the auxiliary "would" to the Spanish inflectional conditional endings.
Lesson Description
This block connects three sophisticated structures:
The Conditional: Like the future tense, endings are added to the infinitive. It’s used for "would" and polite requests.
The Conditional Perfect: A compound tense (habría, habrías... + participio) used for actions that would have occurred but didn't.
The Past Subjunctive in "Si" Clauses: This is the most advanced "formula" in Spanish 3—pairing the Past Subjunctive with the Conditional to discuss contrary-to-fact situations.
Purpose: The purpose is Critical and Hypothetical Thinking. In the world of art and festivals, we often talk about what could be or what would have made a performance better. These tenses allow students to move beyond the "here and now" into the realm of possibility and regret.
DOK Levels (Depth of Knowledge)
Level 1: Recal --> Conjugate --> Students practice adding -ía, -ías, -ía to infinitives and memorizing irregular stems like habr-, podr-, querr-.
Level 2: Skill/Concept --> Differentiate --> Students choose between the Conditional (simple) and Conditional Perfect (compound) based on the timeline of the sentence.
Level 3: Strategic Thinking --> Hypothesize --> Students use "Si" clauses to solve "Artistic Dilemmas" (e.g., "If the museum were closed, we would go to the park").
Support (Scaffolding): Use the "If/Then" Math Formula:
Si + [Past Subjunctive] --> [Conditional] Example: Si fuera (Past Subj) rico, compraría (Cond) arte.
Extension (Challenge): Introduce "Si" clauses with the Pluperfect Subjunctive: "Si hubiera sabido del festival, habría ido" (If I had known about the festival, I would have gone).
Visual: "The Alternate Reality Board." Students draw a comic strip of a real event that happened, then draw a "What if" bubble using the Conditional Perfect for what would have happened differently.
