Lesson Objective

SWBAT identify vocabulary related to cultural events, such as el estreno (premiere), la función (show/performance), and la entrada (ticket).

SWBAT interpret social cues for accepting or declining invitations in a formal and informal Spanish context.

SWBAT recognize the use of the Conditional tense in polite requests (e.g., “¿Podrías ir conmigo?”).

¿Qué conflicto surge cuando recibimos dos invitaciones para la misma noche? (What conflict arises when we receive two invitations for the same night?)

¿Cómo usan los personajes el lenguaje para ser educados al rechazar una oferta? (How do the characters use language to be polite when rejecting an offer?)

¿Qué tipos de eventos culturales prefieren los protagonistas y por qué? (What types of cultural events do the protagonists prefer and why?)

1.1 Interpersonal: Students simulate an invitation exchange, focusing on "negotiating" a time and place.

1.2 Interpretive: Students watch the video to identify the specific details of each invitation (Who, what, where, when).

4.1 Comparisons: Comparing how "social pressure" and "indirect refusals" vary between US culture and Hispanic cultures.

Lesson Description: The characters find themselves with conflicting plans: an invitation to a museum opening or an art festival, and perhaps a second, more "personal" invitation. The dialogue focuses on making plans, expressing preferences, and managing social "commitments" (compromisos). It provides a natural bridge between the vocabulary of art and the practical application of social etiquette.

Purpose: The purpose is Functional Social Interaction. While the Contextos taught the names of the arts, the Fotonovela teaches how to attend them. Students learn how to navigate the "social calendar" in Spanish, which is vital for the Interpersonal Speaking component of the curriculum. It also introduces the Conditional tense as a tool for courtesy.

DOK Levels (Depth of Knowledge)
Level 1: Recall --> Match & Identify --> Students identify who invited whom and to what specific event (concert vs. gallery).

Level 2: Skill/Concept --> Summarize & Classify --> Students classify expressions used in the video into "Acceptance," "Rejection," or "Hesitation" categories.

Level 3: Strategic Thinking --> Hypothesize & Role-play --> Students predict what would happen if a character chose the other invitation using the Conditional ("Si fuera a la otra fiesta, se divertiría más").

Support (Scaffolding): Provide a "Social Survival Phrases" bookmark with phrases like “Me encantaría, pero...” or “¿Qué te parece si...?”

Extension (Challenge): Have students rewrite the scene where the main character must try to combine both events into one night, using conjunctions (aunque, a menos que).

Visual/Auditory: "The Tone Check." Have students listen to the dialogue without seeing the screen and guess the relationship between the speakers based only on the "intonation" of the invitations.

Selected formative and summative assessments from the SENDEROS VISTA SUPERSITE.
